December 28, 2007

The National Football League (NFL) announced today that the city of Atlanta was chosen as one of four finalist to host Super Bowl XXXXIII in 2009. The competing cities are Jacksonville, Oakland and Miami.

“This is great news for the city of Atlanta,” said Atlanta Sports Council President Gary P. Stokan. “After just completing an extremely successful Super Bowl this year in Atlanta, we are positioned perfectly to host one of the world’s largest sporting events in 2009. We look forward to competing to bring the NFL and the Super Bowl back to Atlanta, the Sports Capital of the World.”

The Atlanta Sports Council, in conjunction with the Georgia Dome, the Atlanta Falcons and the Atlanta Convention and Visitor’s Bureau, will make an official bid for Super Bowl XXXIX in September of this year. The NFL is expected to make a decision in late October or early November. Atlanta previously hosted the Super Bowl in 1994 and 2000.
